The iPhone 5 may be the phone that people are looking forward to the most. Everyone who already has an iPhone or another smartphone is already putting plans in place to upgrade when the iPhone 5 comes out. But for people who already have smartphones buying another one doesn't seem like a very exciting idea. How about people who are going to buy their first smartphone now? Well, if you have a phone that isn't very smart right now and you're thinking about getting a smarter one soon, what should you know? Is it all fun and games, or should you expect some trouble?
The first problem you can expect is that your monthly bill will go up a few notches. When you get a smartphone, you have to buy a monthly plan from every major provider. If you think you can just use Wi-Fi and never need a data plan, these providers won't let you do that. In the end, your monthly phone bill will go up by $30. And of course, if you want to text as much as you want, that will cost you another $10 or so a month.
But it's not just about how much your monthly bill goes up. Every data plan is different. You should probably go to the carrier's website and use their data plan calculator to figure out how much data you will probably use. So, when you go to the carrier's wireless store to buy, the salesperson won't be able to talk you into buying an expensive plan you won't use much.
If you want to save money on your data plan, you should think about getting a family plan instead of a plan for just yourself. This makes it easy for families with more than one smartphone. Smartphones in the same family can share data plans with these plans. You only have to pay for one data plan, and everyone can use it.
Now, when people buy a smartphone, they don't want to think about getting a prepaid plan. Just doesn't make sense. But if you could think about this for a minute without feeling disgusted, it does make sense. You can get a smartphone from carriers like Virgin and Boost with no contract at all. If you've never used a smartphone before and just want to see what it's like, this could be a great way to try it out without making a big commitment.
